Our coalition works to create and support marine protected areas and place-based protections in the United States, and to oppose seabed mining.
We bring together more than 90 partners with diverse perspectives, cultures and geographies who are committed to protecting our ocean from human-caused stressors and the impacts of climate change. We believe ocean protection works best when communities come together – across perspectives, industries, cultures, and geographies – to design and move policies forward in a way that combines local knowledge and values with robust scientific understanding.
Many Voices, One Ocean
For all of us, the ocean means life.
It regulates our climate and produces half of our oxygen. It sustains livelihoods and a way of life. It nourishes our bodies and our souls. Our ocean teems with life – from colorful corals to curious sea turtles. From the wacky to the wondrous, for marine life, the ocean is home.
Today, what draws us to the ocean and leaves us in awe is at stake.
What was once thought to be vast, has limits. Human impact, from plastic pollution to industrial fishing to seabed mining, reaches all depths and currents of our ocean.
Marine protected areas help our ocean recover and remain healthy.
They are like national parks in the ocean - special places free from destructive activities, where ocean life can thrive. When protected places are given time and care, marine life thrives, habitats heal, and benefits extend beyond their boundaries – supporting fishing, tourism, coastal jobs, and community wellbeing.
Seabed mining is being recklessly fast-tracked by the Trump Administration, and moving too quickly could seriously disrupt ocean health. There is no credible case that mining the ocean floor is technically or economically capable of meeting even a fraction of our critical mineral needs, and it is opposed by communities most likely to be affected.
